Why does the media rejoice in tragedy?

Why when there are plenty of good things happening in the world, does the media focus on all the bad? Is it because we as people really want to hear about the awful things in the world or have we been trained? Yesterday when I heard of the Metro crash in Washington, DC one of the headlines said “Mass Casualty in Train Crash: Two Confirmed Dead”. From the sound of it they have their fingers crossed that it will rise to a devastating number.
